Reading rates sentiment without mistaking calm for consensus

A calm rates tape is not the same thing as an uncrowded view on policy. Positioning can concentrate even while realised volatility stays low.

Why committees get caught

Attribution looks tidy when duration simply “worked.” The harder question is whether too many peers sit in the same lean — and what happens if the narrative on cuts or holds snaps.

Sources we weigh

We combine survey-style sentiment, futures positioning where available, and narrative heat in policy commentary. No single gauge settles the argument; the memo states where gauges agree and where they quarrel.

For your next briefing

Ask for an explicit line in the pack: “Where would we be wrong together with the crowd?” If that sentence is missing, the sentiment work is incomplete.
